Opportunity for an international writer-in-residence working in Scottish Gaelic

We have some amazing news! Islay Book Festival has been awarded an international writer-in-residence grant by the British Council, and for the International Year of Indigenous Languages we’ve decided to use it to form a key part of our Gaelic programme for this year’s festival (29th August to 1st September).

The successful applicant will be offered a two-week funded residency on the beautiful island of Islay in the second half of August 2019. During their stay on Scotland’s famous whisky isle, the resident will work on a creative project with our schools and a number of local partners, as well as contribute their own work as part of our book festival programme and take part in a Gaelic cultural celebration.

While in residence on Islay, the resident will also have the opportunity to work on their own creative projects, form local partnerships and mix and collaborate with our other festival authors. Sponsored accommodation will be provided, and travel expenses will be covered by the British Council grant. The remainder of the grant (approx. £1,500 depending on travel expenditure) will be paid to the resident as a fee, which should also cover their subsistence during their stay.

Target applicants: the successful resident must be a writer, poet, storyteller or illustrator working in Scottish Gaelic, but who is not a UK resident.

Criteria for application:
> Experience of working with young people on creative projects
> Be able to speak Scottish Gaelic to a high enough standard to contribute to a creative project using the language
> Be able to deliver a project efficiently and one that is engaging and have contemporary relevance
> Have a selection of your own work to share with our book festival audience, whether published or unpublished
> Be available from mid August until 1st September 2019
> We would also be interested in any other talent the resident might be able to bring to our cultural event, e.g. musical instrument, step dancing, theatre, digital skills.

Application Process:
> Applicants should submit a CV and supporting statement, along with a sample of your work, as emailed Word documents or PDFs
> Supporting statement should be no more than 500 words/one side of A4 and should outline what kind of creative project you would propose working on with our island’s schools, along with any skills or experience
> Applications should be sent to hello@islaybookfestival.co.uk marked for the attention of Kirsty Izat (Festival Coordinator)
> Telephone or online interviews will be conducted from mid April.

Application deadline: Friday 5th April 2019
